In remembrance of Dr. Peter Bryce, a public health official who exposed the deadly conditions in Indian residential schools in the early 1900s. we wanted to share with you a Canadian feature documentary film titled The Good Canadian.
The Good Canadian interrogates the comforting national myth of the “good Canadian” by exposing the systemic racism and colonial violence experienced by Indigenous peoples. In this video its mentioned that Dr. Bryce documented alarmingly high death rates among Indigenous children and spoke out against the federal government’s failure to act. Despite the significance of his findings, his work was largely ignored, and his role as a whistleblower was effectively erased from Canadian history.
Cindy Blackstock, a Canadian Indigenous child welfare advocate, social work scholar, and human rights activist reflects on Bryce’s legacy and the importance of acknowledging those who challenged the residential school system and attempted to tell the truth.
