Important Deadline for Residential School Survivors

February 17, 2026

If you or someone you know made an IRSSA, IAP, or ADR claim, be aware that these personal records are scheduled to be destroyed in the Fall of 2027. These records include applications, written and audio testimony, and compensation decisions. Only the Survivor can decide what happens to this information, but action must be taken by September 19, 2027.

Survivors and their families have four choices regarding these records:

  1. Do nothing: Records will be automatically destroyed after the deadline.
  2. Request a copy: Get a personal copy to keep or share as you wish.
  3. Preserve your records: Apply to house your records at the National Centre for Truth     and Reconciliation (NCTR).
  4. Do both: Receive a personal copy and preserve the original at the NCTR.

Please consult email and phone numbers provided on poster to seek more information on how to do this.

This effort to protect national archives is especially urgent as personal survivor records are already at risk; individuals must act now to preserve their own testimony before the destruction process begins.

Why This Matters:

For some, destruction brings peace. For others, preservation ensures that these truths are never erased and can help educate future generations while countering denialism.
